Definitions

Can't talk about something unless it's defined.

So, here are some definitions. Nothing is solid in the Internet/Intranet game. So, change and adjust these definitions to match your own expectations and requirements.

The Internet

"Internet (noun) - A sprawling collection of computer networks that spans the globe, connecting government, military, educational and commercial institutions, as well as private citizens to a wide range of computer services, resources, and information. A set of network conventions and common tools are employed to give the appearance of a single large network, even though the computers that are linked together use many different hardware and software platforms."

........Dr. Bob

An Intranet

"Intranet (noun) - A contained collection of computers and networks within an organisation (it may span the globe), connecting the organisation's members and/or employees to a range of computer services, resources, and information. A set of network conventions and common tools are employed to give the appearance of a single large network, even though the computers that are linked together use many different hardware and software platforms. It's more than a fancy name for the corporate LAN/WAN"

......Mr. Geoff, after Dr. Bob

An Extranet

"Extranet (noun) - An organisation's contained collection of computers and networks, connecting the organisation's members and/or employees and external members, customers or clients to a range of computer services, resources, and information. Thus, the organisation's Intranet is extended (often through the Internet) to encompass the organisations's partners"

A Portal

"Portal (noun) - a door, gate, doorway, or gateway, of stately or elaborate construction; the entrance with the immediate surrounding parts of an edifice, esp. of a large or magnificent building, when emphasised in architectural treatment. Hence, often a often a poetical or rhetorical synonym for ‘door' or ‘gate'"...Oxford English Dictionary

A Network Portal

"Portal (noun) - an access facility that allows users to view and/or change organisational data and information through a single point no matter where they are, or where or how the underlying data is stored"
